conservation of pity

Fartlecks tonight. When I first arrived, DV asked me how I felt today and I responded with a far too enthusiastic, "I feel great!" It was all relative though. Sure, compared to Tuesday I was in good shape, but once we started running, I realized I was still a little tight and achey, just in more subtle ways. It would help if bothered to stretch, but sometimes it's, you know, such a bother.

My deal with fartlecks is I can usually keep up during the fast parts since I'll just keep telling myself that it's just a one freaking minute of running, so how hard can be? But during the slow parts, I need to go really slow to actually recover. Seriously, I need to slow down to a shuffle. Usually, if I get dropped doing fartlecks, it's because I can't keep up during the slow parts.

Anyway, I was somehow in a group with Duane, Fletcher, DV and John, who are all way faster than me. Usually Fletcher keeps the group together though. After the second fast interval, John and I were about 2 seconds or so behind, no big deal. But I got separated at the extremely annoying detour at Congress by trying to go up the stairs (which was a dead end) while everyone else ran up the grassy hill. John waited for me, but the other 3 ran ahead and stopped at the southbound crossing for 1st St. I had commented on Tuesday about Duane showing his pity for me with his nice comments. Well, today it got balanced out. They saw an opening to get across 1st and took off, while John and I got stuck waiting for 3 minutes or so. But no big deal, we got an extra 3 minutes of rest and paced each other the rest of the way.

Afterward, we all stood around talking to Gilbert about his adventures on CNN, and made some jokes at his expense. Good times. One of the nice things about fartlecks is you finish early, so don't feel like you're in such a hurry to leave at the end of the workout.

Looks like a busy weekend... Saturday I'm hoping to do my usual fast-ish (<7:30 pace) 10 miles on the trail if the weather isn't too horrible. Then Sunday I'm going to run with Pat for 6 miles or so in the marathon starting at mile 14. As he was leaving DV asked, "Are you going to be able to run 6 miles on Sunday after you run on Saturday?" He might have been joking, but I thought to myself, "Hmm, good question..."

In personal, non-running related news, I went with my wife Meghal for an ultrasound appointment today to check on the progress of el beskrownito. Goodness he's gotten big since the last time I saw him sonagraphically rendered. His little hands and feet are much more developed now, and I'm pretty sure he was giving us the finger at some point. All in all, pretty exciting. And not one mention of the word "penis"! I was happy about that. Only 6 more weeks left! (I'm pretty sure two exclamation points in a single paragraph is a new record for me.)

Speaking of 6 more weeks, Fletcher mentioned this evening how everyone is so diligent when they start their blog and then the interest wanes and more and more time passes between posts. I'm pretty sure I'll follow a slightly different pattern of keeping up appearances until April, then totally falling off the face of the earth. (Though if you read DV's most recent blog entry, you might conclude that fatherhood still offers one a pretty good amount of free time.)

That's only because my kids are now 6 and 8. Jessica and I could barely keep our head above water until Joshua was 3 (in fact, that age was the dawn of my losing weight/running/athletic renaissance).
